Some will continue their migration farther south, but the majority spend the winter enjoying our hospitality.Īnother fall and spring migratory visitor is one you won’t see at your feeder, but the Wilson’s warbler is like a drop of sunshine flitting about its favorite trees as it forages for insects. Once they begin migrating south, they have been known to travel more than 2,600 miles, and as much as 300 miles in a single night. The summer range of the white-crowned sparrow includes Alaska and the farther northern regions of arctic Canada. These active little birds, measuring around 6 inches in length, have a wingspan of about 9 inches, and they are featherweight contenders, weighing about 1 ounce. The white-crowned sparrow seems to like San Diego, becoming one of our most abundant bird species here in winter months. They are quite fond of the wild birdseed offered in backyard feeders. They feed mostly on the seeds of native plants and grasses but also enjoy a variety of insects and berries. When they arrive in late summer, they can be found from the coastal slopes to the desert as they feed in brushy areas or on the ground near the safety and shelter of nearby trees. But it’s the distinctive, bold head stripes that make this seasonal visitor easy to identify. The body color of the white-crowned sparrow is a plain, pale gray, with brownish wings outlined in white and a strong, yellow bill.
